YEAR 5/6 NETBALL by Anika Scholefield

Every Friday for the past seven weeks, year six and five students have been travelling to Nell. E Robinson Netball Grounds, to play non-competitive netball against other schools in our Toowoomba region. The four teams did extremely well and we would like to thank all the girls for trying their hardest. Teachers were incredibly generous to give up their time to coach and umpire our teams. We would also like to give the best of luck to the Primary school netball team, as they will be competing in a two day long netball carnival, at the Sunshine Coast this September holidays.

YEAR 5/6 HOCKEY by Eloise McKenzie

This term in Inner School Sports we have had a terrific time playing hockey. Friday afternoons we all boarded our bus and went out to the hockey fields in Glenvale. The year 5 and 6 girls and boys played against many schools around Toowoomba. Thank you to Mrs Dwyer and Mrs Nolan for their support. The year 5 team have had 3 loses and 5 wins. Whereas the year 6 team has had 2 loses and 6 wins. We all had a magnificent time on Fridays playing hockey.

⚽️ YEAR 5/6 GIRLS SOCCER ⚽️ by Annabelle Ford

The senior girls soccer team went though the season undefeated. The team consisted of three Yr 5 students - Ava.T, Olivia.C and Hope and seven Yr 6 students - Annabelle.F, Bella.S, Sienna.W, Ava.K, Alice.P, Mia.N, Hannah.R and Lucy.W. Everyone in the team participated and tried their best. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the teachers that coached the soccer students and took care of us while we were at sport. As a result everyone had fun and enjoyed playing against other schools.

YEAR 5/6 RUGBY LEAGUE by Johnny Ryan

This year in inter school sport for rugby league we had a pretty rough season with a couple of loses one draw and a win by forfeit. All the boys tried their best and always came off the field happy with the effort they put in for the team. We would like to thank Mr Rangirra and Mr Franzman for coaching us and everyone that played.

YEAR 3-4 FUTSAL 2017

Congratulations to all 13 teams (a record 91 players) who participated during term 3. The finals were held on Monday 11th September in the MacKillop Centre. The top 4 teams were very fortunate to participate in a Training session with Australian Women’s Futsal Coach Jodie Hammond, who is also an Australian representative. As a player she captained the Australian Women’s Futsal team before coaching the national team which finished runner up at the recent Futsal World Cup. Jodie is a local Highfields girl who attended Sacred Heart Primary and then St Saviour’s Secondary College.

Game 3: Playoff for 3rd /4th: Dominators 2 v Hatricks 9 (MVP: Jack Haddow)

Game 4: Grand Final: Bunya Boys 1 v Smokin’ Unicorns 2 (MVP: Jonas Vanderzee)

What was wonderful evening of Futsal, following a master-class training session with Jodie Hammond! Thanks to Jodie all participants received a special Futsal shirt, learnt some new skills and knowledge of the game. On behalf of Mary MacKillop College Jack Haddow and Sam Lowein gave a heartfelt vote of appreciation before the finals began at 5pm.

In front of a great crowd of parents, siblings and supporters, all 4 teams displayed wonderful energy and spirit. The competition, while friendly was characterized with both passion and enthusiasm.

In Game 1 Bunya Boys caused a major upset defeating the minor premiers 5-1 before the Smokin’ Unicorns won 2-1 against the Hatricks who went on the convincingly win the playoff for 3rd defeating the Dominators 9-2.

In the Grand Final an major upset was on the cards with the Bunya Boys looking the goods before the Smokin ’Unicorns gained some late momentum and scored late in the game to take out the title.

Need for Feed Cooking Program Offered Again in Term 4

This term Mrs Holman facilitated the Need for Feed cooking program run by Diabetes Queensland. A program that aims to educate students on healthier eating choices. The College supported this initiative financially and we had 16 students in Years 7 and 8 participate. Students created healthy afternoon teas, main meals and the occasional dessert. All had fun, learnt new skills and went home with a cookbook and something yummy to eat.

The College is in a position to again run this program next term. We need 15 students from Year 7 to 9. It will run from 3:20-5:20 pm each Thursday from Weeks 1 to 8. If your child is interested, please have them collect the permission slip from the secondary office and return it as soon as possible.

Justine Worner

Religious Education Teacher

Parent Testimony:

Thank you so much Viv and Justine for assisting the students with the program.   Celine has loved the program and we have enjoyed the sampling.  I am going to incorporate the meals into our family menu. Delicious.

Kind Regards

Students’ Testimony:

Sarah Coster: “It was really fun because you got to cook with all your friends and once you finished making it you got to just eat it together.”

Dylan Schmaling: “It was really good with lots of delicious recipes. We got to cooks lots of great recipes and I have cooked some of them at home and the family have really enjoyed it.”

Raegan Pugsley: “The food was the best. I like tasting and I got new skills. I just enjoyed it. I learnt more about healthy eating. I eat pears now.”

Thank You!

Thank you to all the Mary MacKillop Families who have supported our recent events including the Twilight Winter Concert, Homestyle Bake Pie Drive and today’s sausage sizzle.

The Twilight Winter Concert was catered by our Academic and Arts Subcommittee and raised just over $1,000 to put towards the purchase of a quality concert piano for use by our students in lessons, accompanists to ensembles and at future concert events.  There is still work to be done before we can purchase this piano but we are on our way!

The Homestyle Bake Pie Drive was incredibly popular and feedback from Homestyle suggests it is one of the larger orders they have received.  Thanks to the generosity of family and friends of the School approximately $1,000 has been raised for our Year 3 to 6 play space upgrade.

Funds raised from today’s sausage sizzle will also add to our other fundraising efforts with respect to the redevelopment and enhancement of our Year 3 to 6 play space.  Our School has experienced considerable growth over the last decade and the equipment in place is no longer sufficient for the number of students looking to use it on a daily basis.

It is intended that the redevelopment will include:-

  • several additional pieces of play equipment that encourage the use of gross motor skills;
  • equipment pieces that allow children to engage in quieter play (such as outdoor chess board and blackboard);
  • sports based items (including netball and basketball hoops);
  • an outdoor learning classroom, additional outdoor seating and shade; and
  • a memorial garden

We have received draft plans for the redesign of the area and are looking forward to being able to make these plans available for public consultation in the near future.

Years 7, 8 and 9 Disco – Friday, 18th August

On Friday 18th August, Mary MacKillop Catholic College Highfields P&F Committee will host its first senior year interschool social from 7:00pm-9:30pm.

This event is open to students in years 7, 8 & 9 only and includes a ‘Go Pink, Go Yellow for Cancer’ theme. A portion of funds raised will support the Queensland Cancer Council.

Admission is $8 with a canteen operating to sell drinks, chocolate bars and chips.

Student ID is required for entry.  All bags and mobiles must be checked into a cloak room upon arrival.  There will be no pass outs and a dress standard applies.

Family Mealtime Bliss Workshop – Thursday, 24th August

There are still tickets available to attend the Family Mealtime Bliss Workshop to be conducted by Deb Blakley of Kids Dig Food.  The workshop will be held on Thursday, 24th August at 6:30pm.  Registration ($10 per person) can be made via Flexischools.  This event is open to the wider community so please feel free to invite family and/or friends.

For further information, please see the attached flyer.

Crave Food Festival – Saturday, 12th August, 5:30-8:30pm

The first Crave Food Festival is almost upon us and the excitement is palpable!

The Crave Food Festival is an open to the public, family friendly, gourmet food event held on the second Saturday evening of every month. The first event will be held on Saturday, 12th August from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

You are invited to come along and sample from a wide range of food vendors and enjoy a family friendly outdoor movie and entertainment. Bar facilities are also available.

This event is designed as an ongoing community event and fundraiser with all profits supporting the P&F's major projects - currently the redevelopment and enhancement of the Year 3 to 6 play area.

You can lend your support to this event by liking and sharing the Crave Food Festival Facebook page at - then grab your family and friends and come along on Saturday, 12th August for a fun filled evening!  Thanks to Bond Homes & Construction, there is even a $50 prize voucher for one lucky patron who attends on the night.  To be in the running, please visit our Facebook page for full terms and conditions.

A huge of vote of thanks goes to our sponsors for this event:

  • Matthew De Maid – Belle Property Real Estate
  • Bond Homes & Construction
  • Downs Precision Plastering

If you would be interested in supporting the Crave Food Festival events through sponsorship, please contact the P&F via email at

Remember, this event is open to ANYONE so please spread the word!

Woolworths Earn & Learn

Woolworths Earn & Learn has begun again.  Stickers can be collected from Woolworths during the period 26th July to 19th September with one sticker earned for every $10.

These stickers can then be placed in the Mary MacKillop Catholic College box at the front of Woolworths, Highfields or delivered to the School Office.

Stickers can then be redeemed by the P&F for educational resources.  This year the P&F will be supporting our Learning Support teachers by acquiring items that can enhance the learning opportunities for children across the spectrum of academic capabilities from remedial to enrichment.

Learning Support Parent Group

In partnership with the Learning Support staff, the P&F is delighted to be facilitating a series of Learning Support Parent Meetings.

It is intended that this will become a fortnightly event (with rotated days and evenings to maximise the opportunities for parents to attend).  Specialist keynote speakers will also be sourced to address the group on relevant topics, including access to and implementation of the NDIS.

Please save the following Term 3 dates in your diary:-

  • Friday, 4th August, 2pm
  • Tuesday, 15th August, 8:30am
  • Friday, 31st August, 7pm (to be held over dinner at the Highfields Tavern)
  • Tuesday, 12th September, 2pm.

This initiative has been facilitated by the parents in the P&F Learning Support Group with a view to offering support and encouragement to parents within our school community as we also celebrate the achievements and development of our children.

If you would to attend these meetings or have any other questions, please feel free to contact parents Jill Kelly (on 0417 715 980) or Caddie Hansen (on 0414 768 380) or alternatively, the College Office.

23 June 2017

Congratulations to the 31 secondary students who accepted the challenge and competed in the Term 2 Year 7-9 mixed Futsal competition.

The all girls Cringey Cockatiel team of Maddison Groves, Ella Carlish, Sophie Pade, Lulu Jesse, Savannah Nicholls, Amelia Hampson and Lily Merritt tried very hard in every game and finished 5th overall.  Great effort girls.  The best and fairest Cockatiel was Ella Carlish. In 4th place came MMCCFC consisting of Levi King, Luke Chappell, Isacc Pugno, Lachlan Blatherwick, Ben Hurley and Isaac Williams who played a great game I the minor semi-final against Loonie Tunes who placed 3rd. The best and fairest players from MMCCFC were Levi King and Luke Chappell. Loonie Tunes, who looked great in their custom-made player shirts consisted of Bailey Skewes, Holly Anlezark, Henry Sheath, Clayton Pearson, Wihan Kruger and Millie Noonan who was also named  as the best and fairest player.

The final between the Secret Savages and We Are The One (WATO) was a high quality game which was locked at 1 all at half time. An upset was on the cards with the Secret Savages leading 2-1 with less than 3 minutes remaining on the clock, before WATO best and fairest superstar player Tobey Burling helped motivate his team to fight back and win 3-2. Secret Savages goalkeeper Celine Samin was simply outstanding and was awarded the player of the match medal.

Congratulations to the Secret Savages team of Josh Roach, Elly Close, Dylan Schmaling, Harrison McMahon, Celine Samin and Tom Oldham who convincingly won their semi-final and were very unlucky not to win overall. Their season best and fairest player was Harrison McMahon. On the finals night they played with tremendous spirit and enthusiasm and were very generous in substituting in earlier games for both MMCCFC and Loonie Tunes who had some players unavailable.

The newly crowned 2017 Champion Secondary Futsal Team is WATO consisting of Elijah Logan, Tobey Burling, Nathan Haddow, Michael Kenway, Ky Brunner and Levi Logan who went through the season-undefeated winning all 8 games contested, scoring an impressive 71 goals and only conceding 7 goals.

On reflection, it was enjoyable season with great sportsmanship, teamwork and skill on display. Thanks to Mrs Chrissy Carter and Miss Tamara Niemeyer who assisted with refereeing games throughout the season and to all of the parents and siblings who supported the finals night which was a lot of fun. Thanks everyone. I hope that everyone learnt something about themselves and life along the way!

Kind regards,

Mr Steve Moyle (Convenor)

QCIS Swimming Carnival

20 March 2017

Congratulations to our team of 27 swimmers who competed at the second annual QCIS Swimming Carnival at Downlands College on Friday 10 March. Our College competed alongside Ambrose Tracey College Brisbane, Bridgadine College Brisbane, Scot PGC Warwick, TACAPS (Prep), Concordia College Toowoomba and Downlands College Toowoomba.

All of our swimmers were exceptional and we placed 6th overall. Not having swimmers in the 15-18 years age group presents our College with a challenge but there is no doubting we will only get stronger in the years to come.

Thank you to all of the parents who came along to support our team and to Downlands College who displayed wonderful hospitality and encouragement, as well as convening a most enjoyable event. Thanks also to Mrs Kate McWha, Mr Steve Moyle & Mr Steve Coren who helped with timekeeping and organizing our team.

Read to Me

20 March 2017

International Read to Me Day was held on Sunday, 19 March. Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word.

Parental reading to children increases the child’s reading and other cognitive skills (language and literacy, numeracy and cognition) at least up to the age of 10 to 11. Even after children learn to read by themselves, it's still important for you to read aloud together. By reading stories that are on their interest level, but beyond their reading level, you can stretch young readers' understanding and motivate them to improve their skills.

Reading to children is an early life intervention that is beneficial for the rest of their lives. As a parent, you have the power to boost your child’s learning potential simply by making books an integral part of their lives.
